This is a remote controller/data collection rover for the Topcon robotic total station.  The robotic total station “locks“ onto the prism (seen at the top of the pole) with a laser beam.  As the prism moves, the laser follows it by means of the servo-motors that drive the robotic total station.  This technology elminates the “sighting“ errors common to conventional surveying techniques, by removing the need to manually “sight“ on the prism.  It also increases efficiency by eliminating the time needed for a human operator to “sight“ the prism, as the laser continuously tracks the prism.  During the course of a survey, 100's (sometimes 1000's) of readings must be taken.  While this technology only saves a matter of seconds per reading...This can equate to saving an hour per day!
